Race Report 2012
The 5th Poppy Half Marathon – 2
Course records broken
Glorious sunshine bathed the 560 runners as
they started the 5th Poppy half Marathon at 12:30pm on Sunday Nov 10th. Athletes and race team marked
remembrance Sunday with a 2 mins silence at the race HQ by Sovereign café.
The perfect weather conditions and the flat
4 loop course provided the runners with a great opportunity to run fast times,
and they didn’t dissapoint with both the Male and Female Course records being
broken.
James Baker (Chichester AC ) and Daniel
Anderson ( Hastings Ac) who are both former winners of this event, returned to
battle it out in the mens race. While, Emily Proto (Bexhill 5k series winner)
and some new names on the start sheet promised a quick women’s race.
James Baker went off at a blistering pace
to open up a large lead early on, James held this great effort throughout the
half marathon and crossed the finish line in a new record time of 1 hr 9
mins 55 secs, with Daniel Anderson
securing 2nd place in 1hr 14mins 23secs. Glenn Driver completed the
top 3 males with 1hr 16 mins 6 secs.
Rebecca Moore led the female race from
start to finish and was also 4th overall athlete home in a new and
outstanding course record of 1hr 18mins 31 secs.
Emily Proto was 2nd and 13th
athlete home overall in 1hr 26mins 23 secs, with Claire Gaskill in 3rd
in 1hr 28mins 33secs.
Overall winners collected trophies,
vouchers for The Tri Store.com in Eastbourne, and TL Sports race vouchers. Each
group winner also collected a trophy and TL events voucher.
The bright sunshine also brought many kids
out for the 500m and 1km kids fun runs with over 60 youngsters ranging from
3yrs of age to 15yrs taking part. Greg Bennett and Georgia Landy were first boy
and girl home in the 1km race.
People of all ages and abilities completed
the Poppy Half, many first timers, some charity runners dressed at Gladiators
entertained the supporters around the course. Eddie Dolan local BRT runner
completed his 5th Poppy half in 3hrs 16 mins 36 secs at the fighting
fit age of 80 yrs! First local BRT
athlete home was Becci Holdaway in 1hr 32 mins 59 secs to take 5th Female.
Profits from the race t-shirt sales and
donations on race day came to over £500 and will be added to a total of over
£5000 raised from the Poppy Half over the 5 years towards the RBL.
Thanks to supporting club BRT (Bexhill
Runners & Triathletes) to all marshals on race day, and sponsors the tri
store.com, Gibbons Mannington & Phipps accountants.
Poppy Half will return on Nov 10th
2013. TL Sports Events have races
from 5k runs to triathlons, marathons.

Course remains - News 2012
As you know we had been working towards bringing a new course for 2012, as it is Olympic year and the Poppy race is growing into a large half marathon event. By changing the course it would allow the race to increase in participants and take in more areas of the town.
We had meetings with several local council representatives who had promised full support pushing through road closure applications and everything else that is needed to bring a large event to a town.
Unfortunately due to some internal changes in local council and for reasons we are unsure about the situation has changed. The support is not there and we have to start from scratch. Now going through same processes as though we are a new event, not an established race which has brought thousands of people to the town, promoted and raised thousands for Royal British Legion.
This means for this year we will keep the same format as the previous years and keep the entry limit capped at 750. This is a positive, as the race has been successful and the format works for runners and spectator atmosphere.
See you all in November!
11 Apr 12
Entries coming in / New course
Entries are now starting to flood in for the 2012 Poppy Half Marathon. The new course is with the local authorities and we hope to release it soon.
The revised course will stay fast and flat, but allow for more athletes with a better flow. A reduced number of loops but keeping great atmosphere as runners return to the town centre during the race to get a big cheer on from your loved ones.
A donation presentation from the 2011 event proceeds will be made to the Royal British Legion in the build up to this years event.
This will be great for first timers to celebrate Remembrance Sunday in your sporting way or for the competitive runner looking for a last chance personal best time over 13.1 miles!

Race Update
With less than 8 weeks to go until this year's Poppy Half Marathon, entries are coming in fast and we expect to sell out all 750 places well in advance of race day. If you haven't already entered or have friends or family that are interested, we recommend that you get your entries in as soon as possible to secure your spot! The event's success allows us to make continued donations to the invaluable work of the Royal British Legion.
The fast, flat course with a four lap format has great PB potential and allows spectators to cheer on the athletes throughout the race. As usual, we'll be having Children's Races prior the main event (entry on the day), so why not bring the whole family along for an afternoon of racing?
We've got an exciting new t-shirt design and bespoke medal for this year's race (see right). The race t-shirt is now in a technical material which is perfect for racing and training and can be purchased for £6.00 at the time of entry. You can also email
info@poppyhalf.co.uk to reserve one at this special offer price (please state size required) and bring cash payment on the day. A limited amount of t-shirts will be available to purchase on the day for £10.00.
Although we're still a few weeks away from this year's race, we've already got exciting plans in place for the 2012 Poppy Half Marathon. There will be a new course, increased field size and lots more! Keep checking the website for more updates or follow us on twitter (@tlsportsevents or @paulholdaway1) or Facebook (TL Sports Events) to be among the first to find out.
If you have any queries about the Poppy Half Marathon please call us on 01424 810096 or email

Race Report.
The 3rd
Poppy Half Marathon took place in Bexhill on Remembrance Sunday 14th
Nov. Hosted by Bexhill Runners this years event for the first time sold out reaching
the limit of 600 entries.
In the last two years over
£5000 has been raised in support of the Royal British Legion and the race
organisers expect a considerable sum from this years event. Ernie Eldridge,
president of the local Royal British Legion came along to present the winners cash
prizes.
Once again weather was
unkind with torrential rain, but despite this the runners still turned up for
the start on West Parade at 12:30pm
The lapped Poppy course
passed along West Parade, lower promenade, Richmond Road, Polegrove and
Brockley Road. It all created for a great atmosphere with spectators, family and friends able to
encourage the runners throughout the race.
There was a huge range
of age and abilities from total beginners, through to experienced runners. Many
Runners achieved great personal goals including one lady runner who raised over
£15,000 for a Childrens Charity.
Nick Sasha of Torq
Fitness led from start to finish setting a new course record in 1 hr 13 mins 37
secs, local Hastings AC athlete Joshua Varney 2nd and Robert Jeffery
making the top 3. In the ladies race local Bexhill Runner Susie Casebourne
completed her fantastic season with another win, completing the distance in
1:29:00 and finishing 20th overall. Sophie Grant and Ali Farrall
made up the top 3 females.
The children’s races
preceded the main event with the kids fortunately escaping the rain. Over 50 competed in either a 500m, 1km
or 2km race. With the adult
runners and spectators it created
a great atmosphere for the kids, Winners were: 500m – Alexander Field 1 min 55
/ 1km Greg Bennett 3 mins 55 / 2km
– Oliver Platts 7 mins 56. What a future for running in Bexhill!
To list and thank
everybody we would need a whole page, but a big thank you has to go to Stella
from the Sovereign Café on West Parade for offering the surrounding area as race
registration and keeping everyone well fed from dawn until dusk., www.tlsportsevents.co.uk for the chip timing and race equipment
services, Active Rother and Rother Council for their continued support of the race,
marshals and many many others. A huge thank to all the local residents for
accommodating the race, especially from the flats on west parade who handed out
hot drinks to the runners.
Full results can be

(JH)
I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone
involved in organising the Poppy Half. I
t was only my 3rd half marathon but by far the best.
In fact, best race I've ever competed in.
Brilliantly organised, friendly marshals, fab atmosphere, despite the weather. And of course the cakes at the end were to die
for...!
I love my medal too, a really lovely memento, much better than a lot of the cheap
nasty ones I've seen dished out!
So nice not to be bombarded with corporate sponsor tat at the finish, just a medal, water, a piece of fruit and cake - what's not to like!
Well done to everyone involved.
Thanks again for putting on such a fab
event and I'll hopefully see you next year!

The 2010 Poppy Half Marathon has sold out and since then we have had an overwhelming
response for entries.
As such we have worked hard behind the scenes with
Champion Chip to enable the release of some additional 50 charity slots.
As you are aware, we put the Poppy Half on every year which enables us
to give generously to the Royal British Legion.
Please let us not forget that
the day is about supporting past, present and future armed forces, as well as
enjoying the atmosphere and excitement of a great event.
Secure your place on
this historic day and be assured you are contributing towards the fantastic
work of the Royal Britsh Legion.
We are proud to announce that on Tuesday 2nd November from 9.00am through Active Europe, the
release of 50 charity slots, we can no longer accept any postal entries.
Entry fee is £30.00 and £35.00 on
the day (subject to availability)
See you there!
